Last year, Seri loved princess parties—sparkly dresses, crowns, everything. And honestly, I loved them too. Those moments are fun and magical in their own way.

But this year, when I asked her what she wanted for her 5th birthday, her answer was simple and unexpected:

“Mom, what if I share something yummy with my friends?”

There was something about the way she said it—casual, excited, and sure—that made me pause. Maybe birthdays don’t always need big themes or decorations. Maybe some celebrations are already hiding in the everyday things we do.

Cooking Together, Sharing Together

For me and Seri, making gimbap is just part of life. Nothing fancy, nothing dramatic. So turning that little habit into a small cooking class at school didn’t feel like a “party”—but somehow, it became one.

Because we’re in Australia, where allergies are common, letting each child choose their own fillings became the perfect idea. Carrot, cucumber, corn, tofu skin, tuna, mayo—each child made a triangle gimbap that was just right for them. And they loved it.

A Different Kind of Birthday

No princess dress.
No balloons.
Just small hands making food, small voices asking questions, and small smiles after their very first bite.

Instead of being the center of attention, Seri became a little teacher. Instead of a decorated party room, we had a simple table full of ingredients. And instead of sugar and presents, she received something quieter but deeper—the joy of sharing something she knows and loves.

Finding Celebration in the Everyday

This birthday reminded me of something gentle and true:
Big parties are wonderful. But sometimes, the small habits of our everyday life—when shared—become their own kind of celebration.

Making triangle gimbap isn’t glamorous. But on that day, surrounded by kids and laughter, it felt like more than enough.

And maybe that’s the real magic—not in the theme or decorations, but in recognizing the little moments that turn into memories when we share them with others.
